Case Study: Senior Living Provider Uses Packet360 LTE Solution

HumanGood uses Packet360 Private LTE solution to improve services and customer satisfaction by providing residents high speed internet throughout 65 acre campus.

Business Challenge

HumanGood, the largest nonprofit provider of senior housing in California is growing into one of the largest providers in the US. The organization has relied on innovative IP technologies to improve services and care for its more than 10,000 residents across 100 communities.

Over 250 homes at HumanGood’s Valle Verde campus, situated in a hidden valley in the Santa Barbara mountains needed access to high speed internet.

“I needed to find a technology that would provide our community with robust Wi-Fi to several hundred of our residents and team members. Since our Santa Barbara community exceeded 60 acres, solutions that required trenching and cabling were not economically feasible.” said Joe Gerardi, CIO of HumanGood.

Private LTE Solution

To provide high speed internet to over 100 homes, Packet360 was engaged to architect a solution. The environmental conditions were difficult as the valley floor was uneven with significant vegetation and physical obstacles requiring the solution to be capable of delivering high-speed internet in a non-line-of-sight design.

Packet360 consulting architects visited the site, met with project stakeholders and assessed the environmental challenges. Upon analysis of the data collected, it was determined that traditional means of connecting resident homes would not deliver the reliability or performance that HumanGood required. Packet360 proceeded to design a private LTE solution and created a coverage simulation based on available topology maps of the area.

Packet360 leveraged its decades of experience in IP networking and designed, tested and installed one of the first deployments LTE technology for a private enterprise. Free from reoccurring carrier fees, the solution comprised of a total 4 base stations installed throughout the campus.

Each resident was provided a preconfigured, plug-in LTE/WIFI home router that automatically converts the LTE signal into a WIFI hotspot providing the resident’s devices with over 85 Mbps of internet speed. Network security is controlled by a serialized SIM card installed on the CPE device as well as network level traffic segmentation.

LTE technology was the ideal solution as it was capable of providing high speeds without line-of-sight, provided uncongested RF through licensed spectrum in a very cost effective deployment.
